What Is Medical Cannabis

Medical Cannabis (or medical marijuana) is the use of the marijuana plant or chemicals derived from the plant to treat medical conditions or diseases. It is used medicinally, to manage the condition or the symptoms to bring the patient relief. The plant itself has THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, and is the main chemical responsible for altering the brain’s signals to the body. Many people incorporate cannabis medicinally to offset the pain they experience with their chronic illnesses and pain management regimen. A patient can incorporate medical marijuana into their health regimen through consuming products with THC, administering tinctures and extractions, and incorporating salves

How It Works In Your Body

The human body naturally creates a similar cannabinoid chemical, and the use of THC enhances the receptors. The cannabinoids (molecules from the marijuana plant) interact with the brain’s neurotransmitters, changing any “pain signals” to provide the patient with physical relief. THC attaches to specific brain receptors that are associated with the body’s sensory experiences, allowing patients to mitigate and minimize their pain.

A Non-Opioid Treatment

Many patients may have anxiety using opioid based medications to treat their pain. Some may want to stay away from the potential side effects entirely. The use of cannabis as a medical alternative to treating pain has been successful for many. Under the care of our qualified providers, we evaluate each patient based on their needs and concerns, to determine if they would be an appropriate candidate for medical marijuana. Patients are then able to use this option to receive relief from their chronic pain, without any of stereotyped “high” people associate with medical cannabis.

Between their work life and family life, our patients are busy people. Managing chronic pain becomes a third full time job, and many would prefer a holistic approach that can be seamlessly incorporated into their daily health regimen. Patients are provided several options in their method for administering medical marijuana and are able to explore which route is more effective for them. Patients can explore these options to see what qualifies in managing their daily demands. Pain and Spine Specialists of Maryland assists each of our patients in developing a wellness plan that incorporates the use of cannabis medically to help them avoid the use of opioids.

Dr Rao is MY Absolute Favorite Doctor! Love him! His staff at Mt Airy and in Frederick, Maryland are the best of the best. Caring, kind and very friendly. I would recommend anyone to seek out Dr Rao and his staff in a heartbeat.

Randee Fischer

I LOVE this place. Dr B. and Dr Rao saved my life. In 2014, I could only walk about 15ft and had to use a wheelchair. It happened so quickly to me. I had extreme pain in my back, and legs. My other pain management wouldn't help at all.
